Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) - Introduction
Highway 2 between Edmonton and Calgary is the heaviest travelled route in the province. It also forms a key component of the CANAMEX North South Trade Corridor linking Alberta to the United States and Mexico. As such it is a vital link in Alberta’s transportation network and its safe and efficient operation is vital to Alberta’s mobility and continued economic development and prosperity.
The Highway 2 corridor between Edmonton and Calgary has been identified as a priority corridor to serve as a testbed for the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) initiatives. These initiatives will help to monitor and manage traffic flow, detect and clear incidents and provide travellers with real-time information on traffic congestion and road conditions. The purpose of this project is to identify the needs of the corridor, select the most appropriate ITS components and develop a set of functional plans and preliminary designs for the deployment of the initial set of ITS measures.
