The results can be deadly. To be certain that this doesn't happen to you:
  • Make sure you are well rested before you start your trip.
  • Keep your vehicle at a comfortable temperature. Make sure it is well ventilated.
  • Keep your eyes moving. Scan the road ahead, pay attention to your surroundings and check your vehicle's gauges.
  • Use sunglasses on bright days.
  • If you are feeling tired, stop for a short rest. Walk around your vehicle. Do this at least once every two hours.
  • Do not drive after consuming alcohol and/or drugs.

Cellular telephone use in vehicles

It is recommended that you do not use a cell phone while driving. Using a cell phone while driving can take the drivers attention away from the primary task of driving. This applies to hands-free telephones as well. If you need to make or receive a call, first pull over to the side of the road in a safe place and stop.

Child restraints (safety seats)

According to the law in Alberta, it is the driver's responsibility to ensure that all passengers under the age of 16 years are properly restrained in the vehicle. If the passengers are not properly restrained, then the driver may receive a seat belt fine. Any child who is under the age of six years and whose weight does not exceed 18 kgs. (40 lb.) must be properly restrained in a child safety seat according to the manufacturer's instructions. The child safety seat must be installed in the vehicle according to both the vehicle manufacturer's and child safety seat manufacturer's instructions.
