Reducing Fraud by Capturing Odometer Readings
Consumers will be able to get specific information related to a vehicle before they buy the vehicle. Vehicle odometer readings will be captured in several ways including out of province vehicle inspection reports, the Bill of Sale on the reverse side of the vehicle registration certificate, and on the reverse side of the Vehicle Renewal Notice.
The Motor Vehicle System (MOVES) was also changed during routine software updates to accept odometer readings as part of the key information held on a registered vehicle. When information in MOVES is updated, the system will automatically check discrepancies and vehicle owners will be notified. They may then contact the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) to request an investigation.
The voluntary program is being implemented in partnership between Transportation, AMVIC, Government Services and Service Alberta. There is no fee for this service.
The departments will evaluate the level of participation and look at making it mandatory when the program is reviewed in five years. For more information about the vehicle odometer reporting program, a flyer is available at the more than 200 Service Alberta offices.
