Carrier Monitoring

On a routine basis, the on-road enforcement information collected by the department on each commercial carrier in Alberta is monitored. It identifies carriers who may represent an unacceptable risk to the motoring public or to their own employees.

This electronic monitoring is done in three compliance areas:

  • Convictions
  • Inspections
  • Collisions

In each of these areas, thresholds have been established based on the carrier’s fleet size. A carrier’s performance is compared to these thresholds and a value is then obtained – the higher the value, the greater the possible risk to the public. This is called the monitoring stage, which has various levels.

The various monitoring stages that a carrier has reached are used to help evaluate their overall on-road performance and assist the department in determining how best to intervene using the Progressive Discipline Program.
