Ensuring the Safety of our Children: A Report on School Bus Safety in Alberta was developed in 2008 and contains an overview of all aspects of school bus safety including buses, operators and carriers/school bus companies. As a result of this report a number of recommendations were developed for amendments to the Alberta Vehicle Equipment Regulation and are included on this page.  

Recommendation 1

Amber Flashing Lights

Explained that the Alberta Vehicle Equipment Regulation be amended to make amber flashing lights mandatory on all school buses whenever the eight light (red and amber) warning system is required to be used. To view the legislation, click on the title below and then scoll down to section 90(2).

Recommendation 2

Strobe Lights

The Alberta Vehicle Equipment Regulation be amended to make a strobe light requirement. To view the legislation, click on the title below and then scoll down to section 90(4).

Recommendation 3

Side and Rear Reflective Tape

Stated that all buses be retrofitted with side and rear reflective tape as outlined in the CSA D250 standard and that The Alberta Vehicle Equipment Regulation be amended to make this requirement. To view the legislation, click on the title below and then scoll down to section 91(3).
