Smoky River Bridge Replacement

Alberta Transportation has approved funding for the replacement of the  existing old Smoky River Blue Truss Bridge on Highway 40 near Grande Cache. The tender for this project is expected to go out in January 2017 with construction to start as early as spring 2017. Depending on weather conditions, construction is expected to be complete in late fall 2018.

This project will involve the construction of a new, wider concrete deck bridge with steel girders next to the location of the old bridge. The new bridge is not a steel truss bridge, so there will be no height restrictions.  Traffic disruptions will be minimal during construction, as the existing bridge will remain in service until the new bridge is complete. The existing bridge will be removed once the new road approaches and bridge are complete.

The project will also require the construction of .75 kilometres of approach road on either side of the new bridge to meet its new alignment and a new access to the park and boat launch area. Unrestricted access to the boat launch and park areas will be maintained through the duration of the project.

Further updates will follow when construction gets underway.
