The Government of Alberta is responsible for maintaining provincial highways to a safe standard, especially during the winter months. In winter approximately 600 plows operate to ensure approximately 31,400 kilometres of highway are clear and safe to drive on.
Contractors provide highway maintenance operations in 30 Contract Maintenance Areas of the province, including the ring roads around Calgary and Edmonton and Deerfoot Trail in Calgary.
These contractors are responsible for winter highway maintenance operations, as well as summer maintenance including line painting, pothole repair, crack sealing and mowing/vegetation control.
