Seasonal Axle Weight Program
Alberta Transportation has recently updated its seasonal axle weight program. Historically, Alberta has had heavier winter haul weights for industry when frost penetrates the ground to one metre. In winter, trucking weights can be greater because the pavement is less vulnerable when the ground beneath it is frozen, providing support.
Industry relies on this seasonal axle weight increase to maximize their payloads throughout the winter.
After conducting research into the impact of frost depth on pavement integrity, Alberta Transportation has approved a new Seasonal Axle Weight Program which will set the winter weight frost depth at .75, versus one metre. This will provide significant benefit to industry allowing them to haul heavier loads for a longer periodóreducing trucking tripsówhile still protecting our roads from damage.
