Educational Manual
Commercial Vehicle Safety Compliance in Alberta
Education Manual:
Carrier Services, a section of Alberta Transportation, is responsible for commercial truck and bus carriers under Alberta's National Safety Code (NSC) Program. To assist these companies and individuals, Carrier Services has prepared a comprehensive "education manual" titled "Commercial Vehicle Safety Compliance In Alberta" to help registered owners of commercial vehicles (whether an individual or a company) and their drivers to better understand their transportation compliance requirements.
This manual covers many of the critical business and regulatory areas to assist all commercial carriers and drivers such as when:
a. A carrier first applies for a Safety Fitness Certificate, Application for Safety Fitness Certificate
b. A driver or safety officer wants to know more about some specific regulations such as Hours of Service or Cargo Securement
c. A carrier or driver wants to proactively upgrade their knowledge and understanding of best practices and regulatory requirements
d. A carrier has been identified by Carrier Services' on-road data monitoring program and wants to get ideas on how to improve their on-road and/or administrative programs, Carrier Monitoring
e. A carrier has been directed by the Registrar to improve their programs (either in general or by satisfying specific conditions) and needs to better understand how they might do this, Progressive Discipline Program
Modular Format:
This education manual has been developed in a modular format so you can obtain the entire document or just the specific modules that interest you. Note that if you only want a few selected modules, then you should also include the "Introduction" and the "Appendices" as well since they contain important information not included in an individual module (such as an NSC program overview, a glossary of terms and complete contact information).
Manual Updates:
As legislation changes or as new information is obtained, Carrier Services will continue to update and improve this document. It is your responsibility to periodically check to ensure that you have the most recent version.
