Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) - What is ITS

The application of advanced and emerging technologies (compute control, communications, and electronic devices) in transportation lives, time, money, energy and the environment.

(Reference from ITS Canada)

The ITS components and systems that have been identified as being relevant to the Highway 2 project are as follows:

Incident Management Systems

The use of technology to detect, respond and clear incidents as quickly as possible. Applicable ITS components include Close Circuit Television (CCTV), variable message signs, vehicle detection systems, etc.

Traveller Information Systems

The collection and dissemination of road condition and traffic flow information.  Applicable ITS components include CCTV, variable message signs, highway advisory radio, kiosk, broadcast media, (e.g. radio, television, etc.), Internet, pagers, cellular telephones, etc.

Road Weather Information Systems

The collection of environmental and meteorological information to identify when potential road conditions require maintenance. Applicable ITS components include pavement temperature sensors, humidity sensors, wind speed sensors, automatic spraying systems, etc.

Freeway Traffic Management Systems (Urban)

The use of technology to monitor and control traffic flow conditions. Applicable ITS components include CCTV, variable message signs, ramp metering signals, variable speed limits, lane control signals, etc.

Smart Work Zone

The use of technology to manage traffic through work zones to maximize roadway capacity and provide a safer working environment. Applicable ITS components include portable variable message signs, highway advisory radio, variable speed limits, speed sensors, etc.
