5.5 REHABILITATION OF TRANSIT BUSES

Conform with the recommendations as set out in the brief from the Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Urban Transit Association to A.T.& U dated December 14, 1989. Recommended enhancements that would normally be accepted for cost-sharing would include:

(a) bus repair due to premature structural failure

(b) bus refurbishment to provide extended life

(c) bus enhancements for improved efficiency, elimination of obsolescent and safety improvement.

5.6 EASIER-ACCESS FEATURES ON NEW TRANSIT BUSES

 

In order to improve accessibility on the regular transit system for the frail elderly and the ambulatory disabled, all new buses that are cost-shared under the A.C.T.P. program must have easier-access features.

Mandatory Features

  • Larger, easier to read destination signs

    • as large as 10 inches

    • yellow on black contrast

    • 16 percent angle on signage

  • Signal buttons on priority seat stanchion for disabled people

  • Exterior lights over entrance and exit doors, with five second delay

  • Increased lighting for front and rear door stepwells

  • Heat supply to front and rear door stepwells

  • Stop signal wire in bright yellow colour

  • Priority seating with appropriate signage

  • Yellow colour stripes on stair nosings

  • Interior public address system

  • Extended handrails and grab bars with contrasting yellow colour

  • Marking fare boxes with yellow contrasting stripes

Optional Features (at each city's discretion)

  • Kneeling feature which reduces first step by four inches

  • Special angled priority seats at left and right front longitudinal location (reduces overall seating capacity from 51 to 45)

  • Lights under priority seats for disabled people

  • Exterior public address system
