Stoney Trail Functional Planning Study

The Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC) was originally planned by the Province of Alberta and the City of Calgary in the late 70's and is commonly referred to as the Calgary Ring Road. During the 1980's and 90's the Province of Alberta, who is responsible for the development of the Ring Road, purchased most of the lands required for this TUC.

Stoney Trail, which forms the NW part of the Ring Road, extends from Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway) to Highway 2 (Deerfoot Trail).  A functional planning study, completed in 1996, recommended the location and interchange configurations for all the major roads crossing Stoney Trail.  A portion of Stoney Trail, from Trans-Canada Highway NW to Country Hills Boulevard, was constructed in the mid 90's and has since served the needs of Calgarians in the NW part of the City.

Calgary has experienced significant population growth over the last few years, particularly in the NW quadrant.  Extending Stoney Trail to the east will accommodate the traffic demands from the development of new communities in the area.  In 2001 Alberta Transportation selected Earth Tech (Canada) Inc. to complete a functional planning study review of the original roadway plan and to determine what changes were required to accommodate the variations in land uses and population growth rates since the 1996 study was completed.

Project Completion: Winter 2003
